One Month Without My Car

September 14, 2010 in Low-Car Diet

When I tell people that I walk to work they’ll often say “That’s great. Do you even need a car?”  I always say “yes,” because I have places to be and errands to run that make me quite dependent on my dear Honda Civic, but do I really NEED a car?  Probably not.

On a whim, I decided to sign up for the Zipcar Low-Car DietI’ve agreed to not use my personal vehicle for a month, and instead walk, use public transit and the occasional Zipcar.  I would be lying to you if I wrote that I’m an extremely environmentally conscious person and that the need to be more green is encouraging me to do this.  I care about my carbon footprint, but this challenge for me is really about seeing how not driving my car can save me money.

To be honest, the inconvenience of not always having my car available makes me a little anxious.  This was calmed a bit by the coupons, free popchips and other items in the bags they gave us at today’s Low-Car Diet kick-off event.  Then I wondered about how I’m going to get to these places to use the coupons?!  I’m sure that I’ll learn a lot this month and I’ll write updates along the way.  Start Turn off your engines…

Do they charge you for the Zipcar rentals during your “low car diet”? This is a cool idea! Too bad the walk from the Perimeter to Alpharetta is a little far!

Zipcar gives us a free membership and a $150 driving credit. True, your “walk” would make it a little harder to participate.
